The agreement remains in force for 10 years (until 2021), unless replaced by a subsequent agreement. It may also be extended for no more than five years (until 2026) by mutual agreement of the parties.

Moscow has recently repeatedly called on Washington not to delay the decision on the possibility of extending start III and called this Treaty the "gold standard" in the field of disarmament.
